Gum Disease Early Signs
Gum disease rarely hurts at the stage when it is easiest to reverse. Watch for these signals instead.
Bleeding when you brush or floss
Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding is inflammation, and inflammation is the first stage of gum disease.
Persistent bad breath
Bacteria living below the gumline produce sulfur compounds that mouthwash only masks temporarily.
Gums that look red or puffy
Healthy gum tissue is firm, pale pink and hugs the tooth. Swollen, shiny or dark red tissue is a warning.
Teeth that look longer
Recession exposes root surface. Combined with sensitivity or loosening, it suggests the disease has progressed past gingivitis.
Act early
Gingivitis is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and better home care. Once bone is lost it does not grow back.
