Kid's First Dental Visit
How to make the first appointment a good memory rather than a scary one.
When to come
The guideline is by the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth. Early visits are short and mostly about familiarity.
What happens
A gentle look at the teeth and gums, a count of teeth, a soft polish if the child is comfortable, and a conversation with you about brushing and diet.
How to prepare them
Use positive words only. Avoid hurt, needle, drill and shot, even to reassure. Read a picture book about the dentist beforehand.
Your own anxiety
Children read their parents. If dentistry makes you nervous, let another adult bring them, or tell us so we can take the lead.
